Instagram Trial Reels and DM Automation: How It Works

Trial reels show your reel to non-followers first. Here's how to use comment keywords and auto DMs on them, and what to test before you rely on it.

Yes, comment-to-DM automation can work on Instagram trial reels. A trial reel is still a reel on your account, and comments on it reach automation tools through Instagram's official API the same way comments on any other post do, so a keyword comment from a non-follower can trigger a private reply in their inbox.

What Instagram trial reels are

Trial reels are an Instagram feature, announced by Instagram in December 2024, that let you show a reel to people who don't follow you before your followers see it. The way it works, according to Instagram:

  • You create a reel as normal and turn on the Trial toggle before sharing.
  • Your followers won't see it in Feed or the Reels tab, and it doesn't appear on your profile grid unless you later share it with everyone.
  • About 24 hours after posting, you can see views, likes, comments and shares for the trial.
  • You can share it to everyone manually, or let Instagram share it automatically if it performs well on views in the first 72 hours.

The feature is only available to eligible professional accounts, and Instagram's eligibility rules have changed since launch. If you don't see the Trial toggle, check Instagram's Help Center for the current requirements.

Why trial reels and comment keywords fit together

A trial reel is seen mostly by strangers, who have little reason to visit your profile and find the link in your bio. Commenting one word is a much smaller step.

A typical setup looks like this:

  1. The reel ends with a clear ask: "Comment GUIDE and I'll send you the checklist."
  2. Someone who has never heard of you comments GUIDE.
  3. They get a private reply in their DMs a few seconds later with the checklist link.
  4. Optionally, a short public reply goes under their comment ("Sent, check your DMs") so other viewers can see it works.

The private reply is what makes this work for non-followers. Instagram lets a business reply privately to a comment even if the person has never messaged the account, so you aren't blocked by the usual rule that you can only DM people who messaged you in the last 24 hours.

Trials also give you a cheap test: run two offers ("Comment PRICE" versus "Comment GUIDE") on separate trials and compare comments before anything reaches your followers. Treat it as a rough signal, since Instagram decides who sees each trial.

Setting it up

The steps are similar in most comment-to-DM tools. Here's how it looks in Noolu.

  1. Use a Creator or Business account. Instagram's messaging API doesn't work with personal accounts. See our setup guide.
  2. Pick the keyword. Short, easy to spell and tied to what people get. Our list of comment keyword ideas has examples by niche.
  3. Choose which posts the automation applies to. You can attach an automation to a single post or to all posts. For trial reels, applying it to all posts is the simplest option, because the automation then responds to the keyword on any reel on your account, trial or not, including ones you haven't posted yet.
  4. Write the DM. Keep the first message short and include a link button. Our DM templates are a good starting point.
  5. Add a public reply if you want one. Vary the wording if your tool allows it, so the replies under your reel don't all read identically.
  6. Test it. Before you rely on it, comment the keyword from a second account and confirm the DM arrives.

That last step matters more for trial reels than for normal posts. Trial reels are newer, and not every tool lists them in its post picker. Comments on them still arrive through the API, which is why an "all posts" automation is the safer choice. A test comment takes a minute and tells you for certain.

What to put in the DM

Non-followers don't know you yet, so the first message matters:

  • Deliver what you promised in the first message. If the reel said "comment GUIDE for the checklist", the checklist link should be right there.
  • Say who you are in one line, such as "I teach beginner pottery", so a stranger can place you.
  • Give one next step, not five. A follow, a reply or a single second link.

If you want followers out of it, a follow gate can ask people to follow before the link is sent. Use it carefully on trial reels: you're asking strangers for a commitment before they've seen anything from you, and some will drop off.

Things to keep in mind

  • Instagram applies rate limits. If a reel takes off and hundreds of people comment at once, messages are sent within Meta's limits rather than all in the same second. In Noolu, replies that hit the limit are queued and retried rather than dropped.
  • Comment volume is not the same as quality. We don't know of any official statement from Instagram that keyword comments specifically boost a trial's reach, so treat that as a side effect at best, and judge the reel on whether people actually use what you sent them.

Noolu's free Starter plan covers comment-to-DM on one account with up to 10 active automations. You can sign up here.

FAQ

Can people who don't follow me get the automated DM?

Yes. Replies to comments are sent as private replies, which Instagram allows even if the person has never messaged you or doesn't follow you.

Do my followers see my trial reel?

Not in Feed or the Reels tab, and not on your profile grid, unless you share it with everyone or Instagram auto-shares it. Instagram notes that some followers may still come across it, for example if it's sent to them in a DM.

What happens to the automation if the trial reel is shared to everyone?

It's the same reel, so an automation attached to it, or to all posts, keeps working after it moves to your grid.
