When Instagram comment-to-DM stops working, the cause is almost always one of a handful of Instagram rules or settings, not a broken tool. Find the symptom below that matches yours: each one says what's happening and how to fix it.
These apply to any tool that uses Instagram's official API (Noolu, ManyChat, LinkDM and others). Where it helps, we mention where to look in Noolu.
Start here: a 2-minute check
- Comment the keyword from a second account, not the account running the automation.
- Use a post the automation is actually attached to (a specific post, "all posts", or "next post").
- Check the automation is switched on.
- Look at your tool's activity log. In Noolu, the Activity page shows every comment and text DM that reaches your automations, including ones no automation answered, and why a reply didn't send.
The log tells you which half failed: Instagram never sent the comment to your tool, the keyword didn't match, or the DM was refused. That narrows it to one of the sections below.
Nothing happens at all
Likely causes: the account is a personal account, the automation is attached to a different post, or the account was disconnected.
- Personal accounts can't use the messaging API. Switch to a Creator or Business account in Instagram settings. It's free and takes about a minute.
- Check which post it's attached to. An automation tied to one reel won't fire on another, and a "next post" automation only locks on once you publish.
- Reconnect if you changed your password or removed the app from Instagram's "Apps and websites" settings. Access tokens stop working when that happens.
The comment shows up, but the keyword doesn't match
Your log shows the comment arrived, but nothing was sent.
- Exact match is strict. With "exact", only a comment that is exactly the keyword matches. "price?" or "Price please" won't. Switch to "contains" unless you have a reason not to. Noolu ignores capital letters by default.
- The keyword is hard to type. Long words, words autocorrect changes, or words with special characters get misspelled. Pick something short. Our comment keyword ideas lists 64 that work well.
- Two automations want the same comment. If an "all posts" automation and a post-specific one share a keyword, only one should answer. Keep keywords unique per post.
Comments arrive, but no DM is ever sent
Likely cause: "Allow access to messages" is switched off.
Instagram keeps comments and messages separate: a tool can be allowed to read comments but not to send messages. In the Instagram app, open your message settings and look for Connected tools, then turn on Allow access to messages. The exact menu path changes between app versions. Our setup guide shows the current screens.
If you changed the Facebook Page linked to your Instagram account, check this setting again. It can switch itself off.
The DM is sent, but they say they never got it
- It's in their message requests. A DM from an account someone doesn't follow usually lands in requests, not the main inbox. Mention it in your public comment reply: "Sent you a DM, check your requests."
- Their settings block requests. Some people limit who can message them. Instagram can accept a message and still not show it to them, and no tool can see or override that.
The first DM works, but follow-ups don't
This is Instagram's private reply rule, and it catches almost everyone. According to Meta's private replies documentation:
- A business can send one private reply to a comment, within 7 days of the comment.
- More messages are only allowed after the person replies, and then within 24 hours of that reply.
So a flow like "send the link, wait 2 days, send a reminder" won't work unless they reply in between. Design for it:
- Put everything they need in the first message.
- Add a button or question that invites a reply ("Tap below and I'll send the guide"). Once they tap or reply, you have 24 hours for follow-ups.
- Keep delays under 24 hours after their last reply.
Error: "not the thread owner" (code 2534037)
Instagram lets only one app, or the human inbox, own a conversation at a time. Every connected app sees the messages, but only the owner can reply. You'll hit this if:
- Two automation tools are connected to the same account (for example, you tried another tool and never removed it).
- Someone replied to that conversation by hand from the inbox, which can hand ownership to the inbox for a while.
Fix: remove apps you no longer use from Instagram's "Apps and websites" settings, and keep one automation tool per account. If you're testing, use a fresh test account rather than one that already has a conversation with you.
Old posts and Lives
- Comments older than 7 days can't get a private reply at all. Turning on an automation today won't reach people who commented last month.
- Instagram Live comments can only get a private reply while the broadcast is running.
Replies are slow on a viral post
Meta limits how many messages an account can send in a short period, and most tools pace themselves below that limit. On a post getting hundreds of comments an hour, replies queue up and go out over the next minutes or hours rather than instantly. That's expected: they aren't lost. Noolu queues and retries automatically.
The follow gate never sends the reward
- If your tool checks the follow with Instagram (Noolu does), people who tap "I'm following" without following get a reminder instead. Ask them to follow first, then tap again.
- If nothing arrives at all after the tap, it's usually the thread ownership issue above.
Checklist
- Creator or Business account
- "Allow access to messages" turned on
- Automation on, and attached to the right post
- "Contains" matching with a short, easy keyword
- Tested from a second account
- Only one automation tool connected
- Everything important in the first DM, with a button that invites a reply
FAQ
Why does comment-to-DM work for some people and not others?
Usually because of their message settings or because the DM went to their requests folder. If it works for most commenters, the automation is fine.
Can I send the DM to people who commented before I set it up?
Only if they commented in the last 7 days, and only if your tool processes older comments. After 7 days Instagram doesn't allow a private reply.
Will fixing this get my account flagged?
No. Tools that use Instagram's official login and API, like Noolu, work within Meta's rules. Avoid tools that ask for your Instagram password.
